Why do you want to serve on the board?

Let's see, I hear the pay is really good, it has a great retirement plan, and some of the best health care benefits in the world.  And the board only meets about once a month, or so, and you get to talk about your next "run".  And you only have to inform the general membership what you've been up to, when you get into trouble.  Who wouldn't want to serve on the board!  What - no pay, no retirement plan, no health care?  Wait a minute . . . Oh, this is for the Riverside Road Runners, Board of Directors.  I got it mixed up with my application for California State Assembly!

Well then, I love all things running, especially marathons & ultras (my wife would say it's an obsession, but what does she know).  Over the last 30 years, I've ran in over a hundred 5k's through half-marathons, and ran/walked over 50 marathons/ultras.  I've coached/paced each of my four kids, and other runners through their first marathon and/or marathon PR's.  I've been a pace-leader for "the club name not to be mentioned", and a pace-leader at actual marathons. And when I couldn't run, I've been a race volunteer.  My marathon times range from 3:01 to 8:45.  I've been FTF (first to finish) and DFL (dead friggin' last), on more than one occasion.  I've been front-of-the-pack, and (for the last 15 marathons/ultras) back-of-the-pack.  I've dealt with my fair share of running related "maladies", but I keep coming back.  Why?   Because I love being a part of the running community, and associating with the finest people on this planet.   I've done enough races that it's no longer enough to strive for a new distance, or a new PR.  I now derive a higher sense of satisfaction from helping others reach their new distance, or new PR.  I have gained so many blessings and benefits from this sport, and serving on the board is one small way of giving back.

The memories have faded, but I can still remember crossing the finish line, at that very first marathon, 30 years ago.  To help as many other people have that experience, whether in a 5k race, or an ultra-marathon, that is my goal.  And until every American knows what that feels like, my task on earth is not complete!  I envision the Riverside Road Runners becoming one of the premier running clubs in Southern California, and from what I know about the other candidates volunteering to serve on this Board, I know that is possible. So, if this fine group of people chooses to have me serve on their Board of Directors, I would be greatly honored. -Ed

Why do you want to serve on this board?

I am a life-long Riverside resident that has actively participated in numerous sport programs and other outdoor activities offered by the Greater Riverside community.   Several years ago when the running club started at the Citrus Park, I thought I would run one marathon, cross it off my bucket list, and then move on to another sport. Well, I fell in love with running that first year.  I will start my third year as a 9-minute pace leader next season. In this role I have been able to pass on my love for running and experiences to a few new members each year.  Serving on the board will not only satisfy my personal desire to ensure a long-term and consistent running program but also to give back to the Greater Riverside community that has shaped my life. -Jim

Being part of the Riverside Road Runners is important to me a priority. I’m very passionate about our club. The Riverside Road Runners is all about friends, fitness and being able to give back to the community.  I have been running since my first marathon in 1991.  I am  not your typically runner -  I fit more into the Athena category.  Most people look at me and think no way she can be a marathon runner let alone participate in triathlons, but I do and I love it.  Encouraging others to live their dreams, accept themselves for who they are and  have fun doing it is gives me a lot of joy. -Mona

I would like to serve for very selfish reasons:

A)       I want make sure the Riverside Road Runners get established so I have a running club to run with and to keep all of the friends I have made and fellow runners I look forward to seeing every Sunday morning.

B)      I look forward to the challenges establishing a new club will bring and I have no misconception that this will be an easy task.   It has been my experience that the greatest rewards have come from overcoming what appear to be enormous challenges. -Mel

I’ve been running for over 35 years, coaching runners for over 23 years, running marathons in almost every state, totaling 94 as of today—have a marathon in West Virginia this Saturday.  Also, I’ve organized sports teams, community service clubs, Asian Student Union for the last 23 years.  I have ideas of how to make the club more successful in a gradual way.  I hope we don’t try to tackle everything at once, but gradually develop the quality of the club. -Ralm

Why do you want to serve on this board?

I believe that I can help the Riverside Road Runners to be successful and to be the best running club in the area.  I have experience in parliamentary procedure, Robert's Rules of order and how to conduct meetings. For the last four years I have been the Chairperson for the School Site Council, at Hyatt Elementary School.  As a runner I have been running since I was in middle school (1967). I ran cross country all four years of high school. In junior college, I also ran cross country and was an all state runner for the small school division for two years. I have been running marathons for the last six years and pace the nine minute group for one year.  -Porfy

Why do you want to serve on this board?

I feel I can give a “walker/fun” perspective; I was not an original Loper board member but I did attend some board meetings and know that you have to have a cross of many different people to make things work; I am willing. -Theresa

I plan on helping to making our club the best club in the Greater Riverside Area.  I feel this can come from my experiences as an athlete (High School, D1 College & semi-pro runner), coach (High School & Community College), & Physical Education teacher.  With these positions I have had to follow team workouts; be a team Captain & set examples for teammates; give 100% in my races; plan work outs & curriculum; coach athletes; set up booster clubs; order uniforms; set up finances for our teams & do fundraisers; organize & plan for trips & over night competitions; & organize and set up Cross Country races & Track Meets. - Marci

Daniel Genin - Clinic Director

If you could, just say that I enjoy being the Clinic Director because I really like to watch the transformations that takes place with new walkers and runners.  New people go from "I am not certain about this", "I am sure I can't do a marathon or half marathon". "I enjoy the group" "I only did 10 miles today", to "I did it - celebration".  Seeing people do what they were sure they never could do is amazing and keeps me coming out for more.  What an awesome collection of individuals who share pain and the finish line!  My hat is off to all who come out each week to do the miles. - Dan
